Windows Server Problems Caused by APC Software

Failure to upgrade to later versions of PowerChute Business Edition will result in the software no longer providing monitoring and graceful shutdown of systems. Expiration of the Sun Java Runtime Environment certificate is the cause for system malfunctions. Following July 27, 2005, errors began to occur on Windows 2003 Servers with APC’s PowerChute Business Edition version 6.x. When power events occur (i.e. power failure), PowerChute Business Edition shuts down. When power is restored, the UPS reboots and the Operating System is restored. At this time, the software service does not start as designed. The system stops responding to normal logon routines and suspends at “Applying Computer Settings” for long periods of time. Also, there may be delays while trying to access the Control Panel or an inability to stop the PCBE Services.

Updating the system to any version of PowerChute 7.x or simply removing the software altogether fixes the problem. If users fail to upgrade, Powerchute Business Edition will no longer provide monitoring and shutdown of the system. This affects all operating systems, so all users of the software should be aware.
